Biological Safety Training

The OBS offers biological safety training courses designed to inform and prepare you for work in campus biological research laboratories in compliance with standards set forth by the NIH and CDC.  Courses are offered online through Learn@UW, large group seminars or small group workshops.

What Trainings Are Required?

Several trainings are required to be completed within 30 days of beginning work on campus for all laboratory staff (including PIs and graduate students) working in animal research, biological research, human source materials (bloodborne pathogens), and radiological research.

Biological Research

Work in Biological Research requires 3 training courses  to be completed by all lab personnel listed on a Biosafety protocol.  It is required to refresh these training courses every 5 years (IBC policy enacted 2011)

Biosafety 101:
Building Biosafety into Your Research - Risk Assessment

Biosafety 104:
Building Biosafety into Your Research - Safe Use of Sharps

Biosafety 201:  NIH Guidelines

Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP) Policy Training

Bloodborne Pathogens are defined as Human Body Fluids and Other Potentially Infectious Human Material (i.e. cerebral fluid, sexual fluids, tissues, cell lines).  Work with BBP requires participation in the Bloodborne Pathogen program, administered through the UW Madison Occupational Health Office.

YOU MUST CONTACT THE Occupational Health Office  TO PARTICIPATE IN THE BBP PROGRAM.  Specific annual training is required for participating laboratory staff.

BBP offers two course options:

1)  Biosafety-Occupational Health 102:
     Bloodborne Pathogens in the Laboratory
 on Learn@UW
                 OR
2)   Bloodborne Pathogen Training (BBP)
